Ripplefold Draperies: The Elegant Solution for Modern Window Treatments

Ripplefold draperies are a unique staple for modern window treatments that have become increasingly popular within contemporary interior design for their minimalistic, tailored aesthetic. Featuring a consistent s-curve rippling across the span of the track, this treatment style provides a cost-efficient elegant solution to soften a space while retaining the ease of use that’s important to so many homeowners.

What are Ripplefold Draperies?

Ripplefold draperies are distinguished by their elegant, s-curve ripple pattern. This sophisticated look is achieved by attaching fabric panels to snaps at the top of the drapes, allowing you to create the desired ripple effect with precise fullness. Unlike traditional pleated draperies, which require additional fabric to form each pleat and often involve bulky hardware that can encroach on your wall or window space, ripplefold draperies use only the fabric needed for a single, streamlined treatment. This not only conserves fabric but also minimizes the hardware requirements, leading to reduced costs and a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.

Understanding Fullness in Ripplefold Draperies

The most common fullness ratios are 60%, 80%, 100%, and 120%

Fullness is a term used to describe the amount of fabric used in relation to the window width. In ripplefold drapery specifically, fullness is defined as the ratio of the fabric width to the track width. The most common fullness ratios are 60%, 80%, 100%, and 120%, with most ripplefold drapery falling in the 80-100% range. The higher a fullness ratio, the closer together the folds are. Choosing the right fullness ratio depends on a few factors, including your personal preference, the size of your windows, and the overall look you want to achieve. A general rule of thumb is to choose a fullness ratio that is appropriate for the size of your windows, with larger windows requiring a higher fullness ratio to achieve a more full and dramatic appearance.

Hardware Options: Butt-masters vs. Overlap Carriers

There are two hardware options that coincide with ripplefold draperies: butt-masters and overlap carriers, both classified as “master carriers” responsible for the movement of the drapery. Butt-master carriers are used when you want your drapes to meet in the middle without any overlap for a continuous looking flow in drapery folds. Butt-masters are ideal for one-way draws and a continuous aesthetic, perfect for a modern living area.

Overlap carriers overlap in the center of the treatment for complete privacy with no gaps. Overlap carriers are preferred for blackout treatments, as they offer the best in light coverage and privacy, making this the ideal carrier for bedroom ripplefold draperies.

When selecting fabric for ripplefold draperies several considerations have to be made including pattern repeat (and whether or not you want to ripple to pattern), the weight of the fabric in relation to the fullness type selected (upholstered fabric works best for 80% fullness, whereas sheers are better for 120%), as well as the stretch of the fabric. When measuring for ripplefold draperies, the measurements need to be precise. Determining the correct number of carriers needed for the fullness ratio selected is critical, as the snaps have to match exactly. The length of a track, how deep you want to stack, and how far off the window you’d like the treatment to be also ties into the sizing and measurement considerations as minor adjustments to the length cannot be made without hemming. The installation process also has additional factors with the need to both place pendants on snaps and then they need to be snapped into carriers, making for a more complex installation.
