Roman Shades

Roman Shades. Which is the Right One for You?

The name of the Roman shades derives from classic draperies of the Roman Empire era. Roman shades are beautifully folded fabrics that unfold as you lower them. You can adjust the high according to your light filtering or privacy needs. One of the most defining qualities of roman shades is that they are available in a variety of looks, from the typical pleated to the elegant tulip type.

Choosing the Right Shades

When selecting shades, first, you should consider the size and shape of the window. Additionally, it would help if you took into consideration the place of the window related to the sunlight. In particular, windows receiving direct sunlight require a different treatment than those that do not receive it.

Equally important, when choosing the right treatment, is the purpose of the room. For instance, in the bedroom, you may want a solar shade that lets in a minimal amount of light. For a living room, the ideal shades are the ones that complement the area’s furnishings and decor. There is such a variety of Roman shades that they not only will fit nicely in any window, but they will also complement your décor.

Types of Roman Shades

Flat Fold

This folding style is made of one solid piece of fabric with no seams; these shades hang flat uninterrupted in front of the window. Regardless of the material, the smooth drape of this style provides a simple and casual look.

Soft Fold

A style of roman in which the face fabric is pulled up from the back to create loose, looping folds. When the soft fold roman is raised, it shows looping U-shaped ends.

Waterfall or Hobbled

Waterfall Roman, are shades that feature soft cascading folds that ripple down the face of the fabric. They are also known as looped or teardrop shades.

Tulip

Tulip Roman gives a classic charm to your home’s interiors. Its shape is the result of carefully handcrafted inverted pleats along the headrail. The Tulip Roman is primarily a decorative style and not ideal for frequent use, but even as a stationary treatment, it makes an elegant statement on any window.

Placement of Roman Shades

Roman shades for a room can be placed inside or outside the window frames. Sometimes there is not enough space within a window frame to hold a shade, which leaves no other option but to mount it outside of the frame.

Another consideration is the decor. Roman shades can be mounted outside the window if it is a home whose window frames are ordinary looking. Installing them at the top of the wall always adds a sense of height. On the other hand, if the frames are beautiful and classic, they should go inside the window, so they don’t cover the decorative moldings.
